Create A Positive Self-Image Despite Obesity

One of the obstacles in the fight against obesity is low self-esteem. It is hard to have the willpower needed to avoid unhealthy foods if you don't believe in yourself. Without a sense of self worth, it is nearly impossible to stick to any exercise regimen. Often people think that losing weight will create a positive self-image when it is actually a positive self-image that is needed to successfully lose weight and transition into a healthy lifestyle.

Is it wrong to be fat and happy? In a society that emphasizes thin, people are often made to feel that they have no right to be happy if they are overweight or obese. But who really has the right to impose their warped values on you? The model of health that is often portrayed in beauty magazines is really the other end of the spectrum of unhealthy in regards to weight. Yet, these people feel good about themselves because they are thin. What prevents us from feeling good about ourselves just because we carry around a little extra weight? At least people who are obese recognize that there is a problem. Those who starve themselves to look good in a certain outfit don't seem to realize the damage that is being done to their bodies. You don't have to look like a toothpick to be healthy, and you certainly don't have to wear a size 0 or have washboard abs to feel good about yourself.

The best way to improve self-image is through positive affirmations. Replace self-criticism with encouragement. There is nothing to be gained from putting yourself down. Try to make a habit of accentuate the positive aspects of your life. Even if it starts so little as congratulating yourself for having the courage to get out of bed and face the world every morning, recognize the things that you accomplish everyday. Become responsible for your own feelings. Don't allow other people to have an effect on your happiness. Accept that you are imperfect. So is everyone else. Don't belittle yourself because you are not what they seem to be.

Once you are on your way to establishing a positive self-image, it will be easier to lose weight for yourself. Instead of being motivated by what other people think you should be, you will realize that the important thing is taking the best care possible of the beautiful person that you are. Obesity doesn't have to mean unhappiness and depression. Instead, turn your life around so that you love that person in the mirror regardless of the way the reflection looks.
